It’s not just at Wimbledon that tennis fans have been enjoying strawberries and cream this week - members of a tennis group in South Derbyshire have celebrated their second anniversary with the traditional treat.

It is now two years since the Senior Tennis Group was set up on Maurice Lea Memorial Park, in Church Gresley. The idea of one of its members Carol Read, it was started with the help and support of South Derbyshire District Council parklife officer Yvonne Waring.

The friendly, sociable group plays weekly on Tuesday mornings between 10am and noon with kit provided for those who don’t bring their own. The group is of mixed ability and welcomes new members.

Yvonne Waring said: “The group deserves congratulations. It is great to see the tennis courts being used on a weekly basis by the group. This year we have the largest number of participants using all the courts. It also encourages other age groups to make use of the great facilities available.”
