Burton and South Derbyshire College played host to a group of 10 students from Daedong College in South Korea for a week.

The group visited the college to learn more about social welfare practices that are used in UK education.

All 10 international students are social welfare practitioners from South Korea, looking at entering a range of careers in the future from childcare and teaching to social work and care home management.

While in Staffordshire, the group also visited the Mosley Academy in Anslow and the Burton branch of YMCA as part of their study programme.

On the visit to Mosley Academy, the guests were given a tour of the school and its surrounding facilities. They were able to watch classroom discussion and sessions, before taking part in a question and answer session with the schoolchildren about their experience in education.

Ame, a year 6 pupil, took part in the question and answer session and got to question the South Korean guests. She said: “It was really interesting to meet people from different places and talk to people we don’t know as much about.”

Fellow pupil Alex said: “It was cool hearing another language and it makes you want to learn it!”

Laura Smith, a teacher from Mosley Academy, has expressed how pleased she is with how the visit went and felt like it benefited the Staffordshire schoolchildren immensely.

She said: “The children really enjoyed welcoming our visitors to the school and showing them the activities they were doing. It was great to share their learning and find out about education in other countries too.”

During their visit to the YMCA in Burton, the group were shown the accommodation areas and the food bank, while also finding out about the running of the soup kitchen and how reliant the service is on donations and charity work.

Ann Walton, the International Operations Manager at Burton and South Derbyshire College, has highlighted the benefits of the visit and hopes they can return next year.

Mrs Walton said: “This is the second year running we have taken a group of students from Daedong Health College in South Korea to visit Mosley Academy, Anslow and the YMCA in Burton.

“The feedback we received from our guests regarding these visits has been fantastic. They were made to feel extremely welcome and were very impressed with both settings. We hope to be able to repeat this again next year.”
