A 57-year-old man who is accused of absconding from a Derbyshire open prison back in 1995 has been arrested at a Channel Tunnel site in France.

Michael John Ashworth, was arrested by British officers in Coquelles as he attempted to board a Eurotunnel train heading to the UK on Sunday, Kent Police said.

Ashworth, who is alleged to have fled HMP Sudbury 22 years ago, while serving a five-year sentence was believed to have had 18 months left to serve at the time of his disappearance, when he failed to return having been released on a temporary licence.

Ashworth has been charged with escaping from lawful custody and is due to appear before Medway Magistrates.
