A popular independent business in Burton is to close next month, blaming a lack of shoppers in the town.

Three young men opened Super Shakes, in Station Street, almost three years ago after dreaming of running their own business selling milkshakes and comic books.

However, due to a lack of custom they have decided to close next month – but will be open for Burton's statutes fair on October 3 and 4. They have yet to announce the actual closing date.

One of the owners, Matt Reid, told the Burton Mail that many shoppers were opting to travel to Derby instead of Burton as the city has similar shops and more choice.

The three announced their decision to close on social media, saying: "It is with sadness that we have to tell you that as of the start of October, Super Shakes will be shutting its doors for the last time.

"This decision was not made lightly and nobody is more disappointed by it than ourselves. That being said we would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped make Super Shakes what it was.

"To everyone that helped us out by volunteering, by bringing new and wonderful things to the store, by sharing any posts, and of course by being customers. Without you all we wouldn't have been here for the last three years so thank you all so much."

They also had some advice for any future entrepreneurs, saying: “Finally to all those who have come in over the years and said they'd always wanted to do something like this, now is the time!

"It's not easy and it's one of the most stressful things you can ever do but it's worth it, for better or for worse.

"It's no secret that Burton is lacking in excitement; if everyone that wanted to start something new and interesting did it at the same time just imagine what this town could be!"
