A small group of travellers have pitched their caravans outside a popular hotel near Burton.

The Mercure Burton upon Trent Newton Park Hotel, in Newton Road, Newton Solney, says its operator Jupiter Hotels is aware that travellers and their caravans are camped out on the grass verge in front of the hotel.

The hotel says it is aware and is investigating

Duty manager Susan Holdway said: "Jupiter Hotels are aware of the recent incident. This is currently being investigated and we will be able to provide more information in due course."

The hotel remains open.

Eye witnesses said they saw the travellers speaking to police at around 8pm this evening, Wednesday, August 16.

One eye witness said two caravans had pulled up with fold-up chairs and a table. Some of the travellers were seen sitting on the chairs.

Derbyshire Police, which is believed to be investigating, has not yet provided information to the media.
