A man and a teenager have been arrested after officers pursued a car through South Derbyshire.

A Volkswagen Golf sped away officers at 3.40am today, Wednesday, July 5, heading along the A6 Wilmorton stretch, police have said.

After the car sped off, specially trained officers were deployed to follow the car.

The Golf continued toward Castle Donington, past Donington Park and through Swadlincote and was eventually stopped when officers used a stinger device on the A514 near Calke Abbey. A stinger is a spiked mat that is laid on the road by police and bursts the tyres of fleeing cars, forcing them to stop.

A police spokesman said that two people were arrested in a nearby field. A 16-year-old Woodville boy was arrested on suspicion of theft of a car, dangerous driving and failing to stop. A 21-year-old Derby man was arrested on suspicion of the same offences and also of obstructing a constable in the execution of their duty.

They both remain in custody and are being questioned today.
