Supermarket chain Aldi has revealed that it will be creating 4,000 new jobs in the UK to support its expansion plans. The store chain currently has more than 700 stores in Britain, including ones in Burton, Hilton and Swadlincote.

The company is also creating a massive distribution site at Sawley, near Long Eaton, in Derbyshire. This venue will eventually employ up to 1,000 people.

Now Aldi, which last year attracted nearly a million new customers through the doors, is eyeing even more stores.

It has not yet said where these new outlets will be. However, if its recent growth continues, it will remain on course to achieve its goal of 1,000 UK stores by 2022.

It is understood that the 4,000 new jobs Aldi is planning to create include store assistants and deputy manager roles.

Matthew Barnes, the firm's UK and Ireland chief executive, said: "The success of Aldi in the UK is due to the hard work and commitment of our employees, and they are crucial to our future expansion plans."

New supermarket jobs on offer

In recent years, Aldi has opened a number of new stores in Staffordshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, as well as expanding and upgrading existing outlets.

And more outlets could be on the way. It is understood that Aldi will take space at the yet to be created College Retail Park, on a site between Normanton Road and Burton Road, in Derby, by the middle of next year.

The business has also submitted an application to build a supermarket in Chellaston, in Derby, reports the Burton Mail's sister title the Derby Telegraph.

Earlier this year, Aldi had plans for a store at the junction of Uttoxeter New Road and Talbot Street in Derby, turned down by Derby City Council over road safety concerns - but it has vowed to come back with a new proposal.

Aldi was founded more than a century ago when Anna Albrecht opened a small store in Essen, Germany. Her sons, Karl and Theo, took over in 1948 and quickly expanded. In 1962, the name became Aldi, shortened from Albrecht Discount.
