A Stretton home which cares for people with dementia has received a good rating in its latest inspection. Hillfield House, in Hillfield Lane, passed the inspection when inspectors from the Care Quality Commission arrived unannounced on July 5.

The home passed with flying colours after inspectors found that the staff supported people safely and even treated the residents to cream cakes, pamper days. They also noted that residents were given privacy with their loved ones to make sure they felt at home.

The care home, which had received a good rating in its previous inspection on October 1, 2015, has maintained the standard of care after the staff were again recognised for their hard work. Residents’ loved ones also praised staff for their support.

The care home was rated good in all areas, with inspectors noting that the registered manager and senior carers were visible throughout the day and were supportive towards care staff. They said residents were supported to maintain their dignity by the staff when they received care and support.

The inspectors found that staff supported people's need for privacy with one resident telling them that they received visits regularly from their relative and had a settee and a dining table in their bedroom to enable them to eat together and have some privacy. Another person told them: "I like it to be quiet and the staff are very kind and considerate and I am very happy."

Staff told inspectors they found their job rewarding with one saying: "Our priority is to make sure people get the care they need and deserve. We all work together to make sure that happens."

Opportunities were provided for people to participate in recreational activities including gardening, while the residents were often treated to trips to 'Birds' bakery for a cream cake.

The Care Quality Commission report stated that people felt safe with staff. One resident told the inspector: "I feel very safe here and come while my son is on holiday. It gives him peace of mind to know that I am safe and being looked after."

Another person said: "Having people around me makes me feel safe and they are all so willing and helpful here." A resident's visitor told the inspectors: "Whenever I come there always appears to be enough staff and everyone looks very clean and well cared for."

Maxine Espley, executive director of Accord Care and Support which runs the home, said: "We are delighted that Hillfield, part of Accord Care and Support, has not only retained its overall good status from CQC (commission) but has secured good right across the board.

"This is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the staff at Hillfield. I am particularly proud of how CQC praised staff for their kind and caring approach when supporting customers. They also made mention of how staff treated our customers with respect and supported them to maintain their dignity."
