Carnival time came to Overseal in July 1987 with the annual gala and parade. The float run saw fierce competition for the prizes.

The Nag's Head Friday Club eventually won the junior section with the High Chapparal Country and Western Club taking the top prize for the best senior float. Toon Carpets won the trade section.

The gala showground was then he base for the events, with the gala being officially opened by Swadlincote travel agent Tony Freeman.

Donisthorpe Scout Band provided the music in the main arena while there were demonstrations of judo and disco-fit. In the five-a-side football, the eventual winners were the Swadlincote Bears who ran out 2-0 victors over Acresford.

Other attractions included non-stop sit-up man Brian Dakin who managed to get through 4001 sit-ups in his fund-raising marathon. Money raised at the gala was put towards the village bonfire and Christmas parties.
