Customers at Littlewoods were dancing around the tills and counters of the store in August 1981.

The jubilant display of fun and laughter was not because the store had slashed its prices to just pennies, it was because a disco was pounding away in the foyer of the store.

The disco was a novel and unusual way for the Burton store to promote its record and music department.

The manager of the Littlewoods branch said it was an unusual sight to see people dancing with their shopping trolleys as part of its promotion scheme.

Speaking in 1981, Mr Fisher said: “Littlewoods has not previously been known for records although we have always supplied them.

“We hope this will bring our record department to people’s attention .”

The disco was run by Ian Watson and Stuart Marshall of Soundtrack Roadshow disco.
