Visitors drawn from Britain's brewing industry turned out to see the newly-commissioned Marston's Union Room in September 1992. The new room was given the title of The Alpin Room and was named after former head brewer Allan Alpin.

The room was officially opened by Mr Alpin's widow, Joan, as Allan died just a few weeks before the grand opening. Marston's chairman Michael Hurdle said Mr Alpin’s death made the board even more committed to their decision.

Mr Hurdle said: "It seemed even more appropriate and it is a tribute to his commitment to our beers."

The Alpin Room was commissioned over several months in 1992 and is the room where Pedigree is brewed.

Speaking in 1992, Mr Hurdle said the room would guarantee quality at the brewery for years to come and was a commitment to the existing quality of Pedigree.

Allan Alpin worked at Marston's for 36 years between 1956 and 1992. He was head brewer between 1967 and 1984, production director between 1984 and 1991 and also served as a director between 1972 and 1992.
