A once-derelict pub was given a new lease of life in August 1982. Doug and Muriel Lewis were the new owners of the Old Punch Bowl in Green Street.

The couple had previously run the Galaxy in High Street for six years but felt like they needed a change of pub and scenery.

The Old Punch Bowl was derelict until Doug and Muriel gave it a complete refurbishment. Beneath the jungle of a garden the couple found tables and chairs which were cleaned-up ready for the new beer garden.

Most of the decorating was completed by members of the Lewis family. The new layout included a large bar area with amusement machines, a pool table and a spacious lounge. The kitchen was revamped to allow the couple to offer grills and chips at lunchtimes and in the evening.

The pub's official opening was carried out by the Mayor and Mayoress of Burton George and Carol Callister. However, the largest crowds were reserved for the evening when motorcycling legend Ron Haslam made an appearance to meet fans and sign memorabilia.
