The A50 is now open at Uttoxeter after being closed for most of the day due to a lorry driver dying this morning when his vehicle overturned.

The A50 westbound has been closed between the A522 at Uttoxeter and Tean and the A521 at Blythe Bridge roundabout and Draycott for most of the day.

This has led to congestion on the A50 to B5030 Ashbourne Road at the Little Chef roundabout while accident investigation work takes place.

Early today, Thursday, August 31, a 48-year-old man from Dunstall was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, after a lorry driver was killed on the A50.

The lorry driver was driving along the road when police say the vehicle overturned after being involved in an incident with another vehicle.

Emergency services were called to the A50 westbound between the McDonald's roundabout and the A522, near Uttoxeter, at around 10am today.

West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed that there was nothing that could be done to save the lorry driver. A spokesman said: "Another lorry driver stopped and tried to assist the other driver. He was joined by police officers.

"Ambulance staff arrived shortly afterwards, but sadly it quickly became clear that nothing could be done to save the driver in the overturned lorry and he was confirmed dead at the scene.

"The second lorry driver was treated for cuts and abrasions to his right arm but was discharged on scene."

The man's next of kin are being informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.

Traffic is being moved off the westbound carriageway and then a cordon will remain, with traffic diversions in place to avoid further congestion. Drivers have been warned they could face delays in the area.

Anyone who has any information regarding this incident, should call the non-emergency 101 police number quoting incident number 170 of August 31.
