A victim who lost her leg in the Smiler crash at Alton Towers suffered another near-death experience when her car veered off the road while filming in Vietnam.

Alton Towers crash amputee Vicky Balch was left shaken while filming a BBC documentary in the country.

The 22-year-old, who lost her right leg after the 2015 horror theme park accident, broke down in tears when the brakes failed on her car.

Vicky said the scare "brought a lot back" after she veered dangerously off road as she travelled along Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh trail.

The former dancer - who was filming the show Without Limits: Vietnam - told BBC crew: "If the barriers hadn't stopped us, we would have gone over the edge. It was like 'what if? It was overwhelming and I think that just brought everything back up to the surface."

Brave Vicky managed to bring the car to a stop before it lost control as she is on a 900-mile journey travelling along Ho Chi Minh trail to Hang Chuot - which is notoriously hard to reach.

Vicky was seriously injured when the Smiler rollercoaster at the Staffordshire theme park crashed into a stationary carriage two years ago. Both she and another passenger, 19-year-old Leah Washington, were so badly crushed they lost a leg. Another 15 people were injured.

Since then, Vicky has spoken candidly about the accident and her bid to adjust to her new life.

Vicky, of Grismargh near Preston, said after her second brush with death: "I love driving. If I didn't do it now I probably wouldn't."

Vicky, who uses a £70,000 prosthetic leg, has become a poster girl for strength and survival thanks to the remarkable way she has dealt with the aftermath of the crash.

She signed up for the two-part series determined to restore her independence, admitting: 'I've been wrapped in cotton wool since the accident. I'd never thought I'd be doing anything like this. I was sat in a hospital bed wondering what I was going to do with the rest of my life."

Vicky told The Sun : "I've been wrapped in cotton wool since the accident, so it’s nice to be the independent person that I am."

In Without Limits Vicky and her fellow travellers embark on a three-week epic journey in cars and on motorbikes across some of the world's most challenging terrain in 40 degree heat and 100 per cent humidity.

Joining her are fellow Brits Mary Russell, 47, born with dwarfism and suffering from depression, Louise Halvey, who has progressive hearing loss, and Olympic wheelchair rugby captain Steve Brown, 36, who is paralysed from the chest down after an accident.

Completing the team are marathon runner Charlie Lewis, 32, who convinced a surgeon to amputate his right leg following a snowboarding accident which left him in constant pain, as well as Andy Slade, 52, who lost his left arm in an industrial accident but has since become the UK's fastest one-armed man on a motorbike.

The Ho Chi Minh trail, named after the infamous Communist leader, is a network of tracks and roads that were used by soldiers during the Vietnam War.

The show was aired on Thursday night, September 14.
