Burton Mail readers are today mourning arguably the most influential musician in popular music - exactly 40 years on from his death.

Elvis Presley was an incredible singer and performer, breaking the mould of more conservative male pop stars with his provocative hip-swinging style and sultry voice.

He was an icon beyond his, at the time, controversial antics on stage, which, admittedly, are tame by today's standards.

The man known as "The King" also excelled on the silver screen, starring in a host of films in the 1950s.

It is often argued the "British Invastion" bands, including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Who, would not have existed without the ground-breaking American.

The man who brought us hits including Blue Suede Shoes, Love me Tender and Hound Dog sadly died in 1977 after suffering a heart attack in the bathroom of his home in Graceland, Tennessee, aged just 42.

Some of our readers have taken to Facebook to recall where they were on that fateful day.

Janet Williams said: "I was driving up the Canning Highway, in Perth WA."

Brigitte Lock said: "I'd just gone to bed, I cried yet I was only a teenager but my mum had been a big fan of his earlier music so the love must have passed on to me too."

Natasha Hyde said: "It's the very day I was born so I don't remember a thing."

Sarah Billings said: "I was 11 and remember my mum had the radio on when the news came in."

Michelle Wright was on the way to Cornwall and Debby Stocks was en-route to South Wales for a family holiday, while Sandra Ryde said she was at youth club when she heard the news.

Despite being the heart-throb that young girls loved and their dads feared, Elvis was far from the well-sculpted specimen he was on his early days when he died.

It is thought he had serious long-term health problems, was bed-ridden and weighed 25 stone.

He was married to Priscilla, who was just 14 when they met, and had one child, Lisa-Marie.
