Community groups in Measham and Appleby are celebrating after unveiling their new community-use media minibus. The mobile and interactive space contains music, film, and media equipment designed to engage young people and provide access to high quality resources that would not usually be readily available.
Appleby Magna Parish Council, Measham Mobility and The Sir John Moore Foundation have been fund-raising for the mini bus that will provide opportunities for young people to learn a host of new skills.
The group received £10,000 through North West Leicestershire District Council’s £20,000-for-Seven scheme, which provides funding to worthy community projects.
Leicestershire County Council contributed a further £12,500 from its SHIRE grant scheme to the project while coal mining company UKCSMR Ltd. donated £8,200 through their Minorca Community Fund Committee.
Alan Oakes, chairman of the Measham mobility and media bus committee, said: "I would like to thank the sponsors that have made contributions to enable the purchase of this fantastic vehicle for community use.
"Groups such as scouts, guides, youth clubs, churches, schools and other local organisations can now book to use the bus and make the most of what it has to offer.
"We are also looking to recruit additional volunteer drivers and anyone interested can call 01530 272172. That's also the number to call to book the bus or simply find out more information.”
Councillor John Clarke, deputy chairman of the district council, said: "The media aspect of the mini bus will offer music, film and media equipment which can be used for bespoke sessions for the community. The community aspect will offer a high quality accessible solution for people with mobility issues.
"For all parts of the community the media mini bus will tackle social isolation in this local area and provide a platform for social interaction. The plans are fully sustainable, ensuring it will continue for many years to come.
"My congratulations to everyone involved in this great project. The district council has been very pleased to support the group through the '£20,000 for Seven' grant programme."
Bob Walsh, chairman of the Minorca Community Fund Committee, said: "The Minorca Community Fund Committee was set up to independently distribute the funds donated by UKCSMR to worthy causes within the three parish councils bordering the opencast site at Minorca.
"The Measham Mobility Bus was deemed a facility available to all the three parishes and as such was a clear worthy recipient. We wish them many years of community use."
The council's £20,000-for-seven scheme has seen £240,000 handed out to various projects after the public voted on which they felt were most deserving of help.
