A Hilton teenager has been given a suspended prison sentence after driving while banned from the roads and damaging property.

James Deas, a 19-year-old boy of Thames Way, Hilton appeared at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates Courts on Tuesday, September 5, where he pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified and damaging a neighbour's vehicle and fence.

Deas was driving a Vauxhall Corsa in Egginton Road, in Hilton, on Thursday, April 20, when he was spotted by officers from the Hilton Safer Neighbourhood Team.

The car was seized after being found abandoned on Thames Way, near to a damaged van and fencing.

Deas was interviewed and summoned to appear at court, where he was given an eight-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, ordered to pay £200 in compensation to the victim for the damage and must pay a further £85 in costs.

Sergeant Graham Summers, from Derbyshire Police has said: "We are pleased that justice has taken its course in this case. The young man had dangerously ignored his disqualification from driving and got behind the wheel again.

"It shows that the local safer neighbourhood team strive to have a good knowledge of those offending in the area and will not hesitate to bring them to justice when and if they continue to offend.

"I hope that Mr Deas can learn from his mistake by realising how close he was to going to jail and so will now not cause the potential risk to other road users by continuing to drive whilst disqualified."
