A Lamborghini driver had his expensive car seized by police after he could not prove he had insurance after he was stopped for “showing off and driving erratically” around Derbyshire.

The 36-year-old was pulled over by police after reports that he was driving the £155k Huracán in an “anti-social manner” through the Derby area.

Police officials spoke to the driver shortly after midnight on Sunday and said he could not “satisfy officers that the correct level of insurance was in place for him to drive the car”.

Gocompare.com says that insuring a Lamborghini Huracán, with a voluntary excess of £500, would cost around £3,000 for a 36-year-old man living in Normanton Road, Derby.

Derbyshire’s Roads Policing Team posted a tweet on Monday morning saying the man was driving in an “eratic” way.

It said: “Not a good idea to show off and drive in an erratic manner when you can’t provide any evidence of insurance at roadside. #Seized”

Sergeant Keith Chambers, of the Normanton and Rosehill safer neighbourhood team, later told the Derby Telegraph that officers pulled over the driver at 12.06am on Monday.

He said: “The vehicle was seen in the Normanton area of Derby being driven in an anti-social manner. Officers stopped the vehicle and spoke to the 36-year-old driver who could not satisfy officers that the correct level of insurance was in place for him to drive the car.”

Sgt Chambers said that officials used the Road Traffic Act to seize the car and then reported the driver for having no insurance.

He said the team were on the lookout for possible dangers as many people in Normanton were celebrating the Muslim festival Eid.

He said: “Due to the increased activity late last night, with the local community celebrating Eid, it is important that people going about their lives feel safe to do so, and this extends to any vehicle that is driven in such a manner that causes alarm or distress.”
