A motorist arrested on suspicion of driving offences was taken to hospital when he started suffering breathing difficulties in the back of a police car.

The Toyota Avensis driver was stopped on the A38, in Burton, on Friday, September 15. The 36-year-old was arrested on suspicion of – and later charged with – drink driving and driving without insurance.

However, as police were transporting the man to Burton Police Station, he started struggling to breathe.

They stopped at the junction of Park Avenue and Ashbourne Road, next to the Little Chef A50 roundabout, in Uttoxeter, and called paramedics.

The man was taken to Queen's Hospital, in Burton. He was later discharged from the Belvedere Road hospital. Officers then took him to the police station where he was charged with the alleged offences.

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: "The suspect was taken to hospital as a precaution, before being discharged and taken to Burton Police Station, where he was charged with drink driving and driving without insurance.

"He was granted unconditional bail to appear at South Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court on Monday, October 2."

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We received a call from police at around 8.30am.

"An ambulance and a rapid response paramedic attended and treated a man for breathing problems, before taking him to Queen’s Hospital."
