Police have named a man who died after falling ill at the scene of an armed robbery in Ashby.

Members of the public detained Shane Bryant, 29, from Birmingham, following a robbery in which two men entered the Co-Op food store in the town's Market Street on Thursday, July 13, demanding money while making threats and wielding a baseball bat and golf club.

Police arrived at the scene and arrested Mr Bryant in connection with the robbery; he then became ill and was taken to Queen's Medical Centre, in Nottingham. He died there on Saturday morning, July 15.

A post-mortem examination has been carried out, but the cause of death has not yet been established, say police. Further tests are set to be carried out.

Police have not released further details about where Mr Bryant lives.

Detective Chief Inspector Di Coulson, who is leading the investigation, said: "We are keen to have any dashcam and mobile phone footage that anyone may have of the incident on Thursday night.

"There were lots of people in the area who saw what happened and were involved in apprehending Mr Bryant. No matter how short or insignificant you think it is, we would like to see it please.

"I'd like to thank members of the public in Ashby for their support so far and we've spoken to many witnesses, but if you saw what happened, or you have any information about the robbery and you haven't spoke to officers, please contact us."

A 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of grevious bodily harm, but has since been released as further investigations take place.

It is the second raid in the town centre in the past few weeks, as in the early hours of Monday, July 10, a digger was used to steal an ATM machine from a Nationwide Bank.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission is carrying out an independent investigation into police involvement in Mr Bryant's death.

Anyone with information or footage which may help the police investigation is asked to called the non-emergency 101 number.
