A 17-year-old boy has been arrested this morning in connection with an alleged incident which led to Burton and South Derbyshire College being put into a state of 'lock down' and students were forced to stay in classrooms.

Staffordshire Police confirmed that the teenager from the Burton area was arrested today, Thursday, September 14, in connection with the alleged incident on Tuesday, September 12. He is currently in custody, said a police spokesman.

Witnesses to the incident said the college, in Lichfield Street, was put into lock down and students were told to stay in their classrooms as the matter was dealt with.

A college spokesman said some students had reported a potential incident outside the venue and the building was locked down, with students told to stay in their classrooms.

A spokesman from the college said: "A small number of our learners reported the potential of an incident outside the college. As a precautionary measure, the college was locked down until the nature of this incident could be established.

"In such circumstances, learner and staff safety is our priority and the police were called. No-one was harmed during this time and the college returned to normal duties minutes later."

A police spokesman said he would not give out any more details at this stage.
