An elderly woman has been targeted by a thief in Uttoxeter town centre. Police are warning people in town to be on their guard after the offender distracted his 77-year-old victim, before making off with cash from her purse.

The thug approached her in the Maltings shopping centre, off High Street, at around 10.30am on Wednesday, August 9.

He asked her for some change in coins, prompting the pensioner to open her purse.

Police said the thief then distracted her, reached in and took cash in notes. He then asked where the nearest dentist was and walked away.

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: "The man is described as 5ft 6ins to 5ft 7ins tall, with a high forehead and slightly receding hair. He was wearing a light blue suit jacket and a light coloured shirt.

"Any witnesses or anyone with information is asked to call 101 quoting incident number 225 of 9 August. Alternatively, call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111."
