An abandoned car dealership in South Derbyshire which closed its doors 15 years ago is enjoying an extraordinary new lease of life - thanks to a viral internet hit which has been viewed more than 288,000 times.

Facebook page Classic Car Daily has shared a video with its 11,000 followers showing secondhand cars entombed in a case of dust at the former Jetberg Garage, in Castle Road, Castle Gresley, which has been frozen in time for more than a decade.

The video, entitled 'Abandoned car dealership, Derbyshire UK', gives viewers a close-up of the garage which has been closed for the past 15 years, with some old cars still in situ.

It is not clear how long ago the video was shot but the cameraman showed a total of nine cars on the forecourt. The garage now only has three cars in place.

The camera describes the garage as a 'time warp' and a 'car zoo' with the cars locked behind sturdy iron bars.

Some of the cars he found included a 1991 Samara J plate, a Rover 820 on sale for £499 sold as seen; a Skoda J reg; an Astra 1986; a Maestro automatic H reg from 1990; a Metro 1986, and a Cavalier from the early 90s.

Now only three cars remain

The Burton Mail previously revealed in 2015 that, for the sixth time in 20 years, plans to turn the former garage into 14 homes were given approval by South Derbyshire District Council.

Each time, the three-year time limit given for each application has lapsed.

Some still have for sale signs attached

However, garage owner Grenville Isham previously told the Burton Mail he would not give a reason for the delay. He said he would no longer comment on the issue, and claimed there was no public interest in the future of the site.

The vehicles have been gathering dust

Mr Isham had previously asked for more time before demolishing the garage to build the homes, after he suffered two family tragedies in a short amount of time.

The garage has been closed since 2002, but cars from the early 1990s still sit on its forecourt covered in dust.

Weeds are now taking over the garage

Mr Isham, of Hall Lane, Willington, has continued to operate from the site.

In 2010, the Mail reported that an application to build 14 homes on the site had been one of the longest running in the history of the authority.

The garage has now gone viral

The first plans to change it to a residential development were approved in 1993 and then renewed in 2000.

Since then, the application has been renewed four times and withdrawn once, and the future of the site remains unclear.

It has become a eyesore over the years

Should housing be built, Derbyshire County Council has asked that £34,197.03 be donated for three primary school places, as well as £5,400 for library service revenue costs.
