A new development which includes restaurants, shops and 24 apartments could be coming to Burton town centre - if someone buys the site.

The proposed £1 million four-storey development will be part of one building on the site of the former British Telecom Telephone Exchange which fronts Lichfield Street, in the town.

Planning permission was granted back in 2009 and includes bulldozing the vacant building which has become an eyesore in recent years. However, no-one has yet come forward to buy the site for development and it is thought permission has now lapsed.

The 6,400 square foot site is situated in a prominent position on the corner of Fleet Street at its junction with Lichfield Street, and located opposite Peel House.

The site has planning permission for a mixed use, L-shaped, three/four-story building. Planning permission includes 24 apartments, of which 22 will be two-bedroom and two will be one-bedroom.

The apartments will be located on the first, second and third floors, with 30 car parking spaces being provided on site.

The building's ground floor is also capable of sub-division and has planning permission for a variety of uses, including retail, financial and professional services, offices or restaurants.

No interest was previously shown in the site before permission was grant. The present development was submitted as a speculative scheme in an attempt to engender further interest in the site from a developer.
