Make sure you are packing savvy

Make sure you are packing savvy

THERE’S no avoiding it – the holiday season is well and truly under way, and it doesn’t matter how hard I try, when it comes down to my packing skills I always seem to take far more than I need.

I was given some sound advice many years ago that whatever you want to take away on holiday with you, only pack a third. Sounds good in theory but the issue is being brave enough to do it in practice.

Over the past few years, I have mainly holidayed in Britain so the amount of luggage I took away with me has never really been an issue. However, John (my other half) and I are now smitten with the delights of a fly-cruising holiday, so I have had to become more packing savvy.

I can no longer take five pairs of shoes, just in case. Just in case of what I ask myself? I certainly don’t take as many lotions or potions as I used to, and I try to pack outfits which can be worn for either daytime or evening wear. I do, however, always carry a hairdryer, my hair straighteners and my trusted sunglasses.

Here is a selection of some of my holiday must-haves which will be winging their way into my case later this month.

OGX COCONUT OIL WEIGHTLESS HYDRATING MIST. £6.99 FOR A 118ML BOTTLE AVAILABLE EXCLUSIVELY AT TESCO.

We are constantly being told by hair experts that coconut oil is extremely beneficial to our hair. Although I’m not one for applying too much product to my crowning glory I gave this hydrating mist a try on my last holiday. Applying onto clean hair and styling as usual, it left my hair shiny and soft. If used with a really good shampoo like Elemis, there is no need to pack a conditioner.

FIT FLOP CHA CHA. £70. FREE DELIVERY FROM WWW.FITFLOP.CO.UK

I fell head over heels in love with this fancy footwear the moment I slipped them on my feet. The uber-comfortable leather and patent beaded toe-thong sandal is embellished with swings of iridescent tubular beads and they really are jewellery for the feet. Ideal for day and evening wear and I can’t imagine a holiday without them.

BIRTHDAY LOCK. £7.99. WWW.GO-TRAVELPRODUCTS.COM

This website has more fabulous holiday products than you can shake a stick at and this lock is just one of them. Because I am one for losing keys to luggage locks, this one is perfect for me. The innovative combination lock uses a memorable date or birthday as its five-dial combination and is TSA accepted for travel in America. I just need to make sure I can remember my birthday!

RESCUE ME ALOE VERA GEL. £14. WWW.SIMPLYMANUKA.CO.UK

I suffer from prickly heat so this product is high on my list of essential holiday items. The soothing gel calms my complaint and is also perfect for use after shaving and waxing and to relieve the itching and irritation of bites, chaffing, sunburn and minor burns. Oh, and it contains one of my favourite products – Manuka Honey. It’s easily decanted into a smaller bottle too.

SCHOLL FRESH STEP FOOT SPRAY, £3.99. SUPERDRUG

I couldn’t imagine a holiday without my trusted Scholl foot spray. After a day of walking around the city or town our cruise ship has docked, this is just the job to cool my aching tootsies. And it smells delicious.

ANTI VIRAL HAND FOAM 30ML £3.19. AVAILABLE FROM BOOTS STORES NATIONWIDE

An absolute must for any holiday – especially when cruising on the high seas. The foam provides a fast-acting anti-viral and anti-bacterial protection without the need for soap and water. There are many sanitising hand gels on the market which are anti-bacterial but this is the only one I have found to be anti-viral.

CROSS BODY BAG

On my last holiday I refused to take a large handbag – the bigger the bag the more I put in it and this doesn’t do my back or shoulders any favours. I bought a Lloyds Baker of London beige leather cross body bag from TK MAXX and it did me a treat. The one small downside, though, was it could have done with being a tad larger than 15cm x 15cm as there is just only just enough room for my phone, some money and anti-viral hand foam. On the plus side, no back or shoulder ache.

SET OF TRAVEL DECANTING BOTTLES £1. AVAILABLE FROM PRIMARK AND POUNDLAND

Last, but by no means least, this set is my holiday steal. It’s not always value-for-money to buy travel items of my favourite lotions but decanting works perfectly - for both my pocket and case.
