FIREFIGHTERS are working alongside pharmacists to help protect vulnerable residents who may be suffering from dementia.
The latest project builds on Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service’s work in supporting elderly people at risk of fire.
The idea is that firefighters carrying out free fire safety checks in homes may come across people ‘hidden’ in the community who are in the early throes of dementia.
Now, the service is providing training to officers so they can identify these residents and direct them to the appropriate help.
Glynn Luznyj, head of risk reduction for Staffordshire Fire Service, said: “We’ve been looking at the aging population within Staffordshire and some of the challenges of dealing with that.”
