Shoppers could take home a prize as a Burton store marks its 225th birthday by raising money for three charities.

WHSmith, in Coopers Square shopping centre, is inviting shoppers to take part in a raffle this weekend, Saturday, July 15 and Sunday, July 16, for Wimbledon Weekend and all next week to raise money for Cancer Research, MIND and the National Literacy Trust.

Those who take part are in with the chance of winning a hamper from Molson Coors, bottled beers from Marston's, lunch for two at The Winery, in Burton, a goody bag from Boots, DVDs, stationery and one football fan can win a tour around the National Football Centre, St George's Park, near Burton.

WHSmith store manager David Morgan said the whole team in Burton was gearing up for what is set to be a very busy weekend.

He said: “To celebrate the 225th birthday of WHSmith, every shop across the country is getting involved to raise as much money for three chosen charities, Cancer Research, MIND and the National Literacy Trust.

“Every store is taking part in "virtual relay" where we take a picture of something great about the local community and then pass it on to the next shop. For our leg of the relay, we we’re aiming to raise £1,500 for three fantastic causes.

“To hit our target, we’re giving away prizes that are local to Burton and that celebrates what is great about the area. We’ve got a brilliant range of prizes that I’m sure will go down a treat with shoppers.”

Coopers Square centre manager David Chadfield praised the charitable nature of the WHSmith team ahead of the weekend.

He said: “It’s great when our stores support charities such as these. We’ve got so much going on during Saturday and Sunday with our Wimbledon Weekend and this really adds to the excitement. I’m looking forward to seeing how much is raised by the store and from everyone at the centre I’d like to wish them good luck with their fund-raising.”

To be in with the chance of winning any one of the prizes from WHSmith, shoppers should visit the store anytime from Saturday, July 15 to Saturday, July 22. Raffle tickets are priced £1 each or three for £2.

The draw will take place at the end of business on Saturday, July 22 and the winners will be contacted shortly afterwards. Entrants must be aged 18 or older.
