An underground fire left Sky customers across Burton and South Derbyshire without broadband and phone lines.

Customers in Burton, Tutbury, Barton under Needwood, Repton, Etwall, Derby, Chellaston, Allestree, Breadsall, Duffield, Alvaston, Sandiacre, Ashbourne, Mickleover, Peartree and Long Eaton experienced phone problems during the evening of Monday, July 10.

The repair work continued throughout the night and most people had their service back to normal this morning, Tuesday, July 11.

Sky Help Team tweeted this morning: "Repair works have continued overnight. Service restored to a number of you. Final repair works are in progress."

Last night information on the service status section of Sky's website read: "You might not be able to get online or make/receive phone calls due to a problem in your local area.

"We're working on fixing the problem and we'll provide an update on this page once we've discovered what is causing the fault. We're sorry for any inconvenience caused."

The fault was initially reported just after 5.15pm.

Fibre broadband customers also faced similar issues in Allestree, Alvaston, Ashbourne, Belper, Brailsford, Breadsall, Castle Donington, Chellaston, Duffield, Draycott, Derby, Etwall, Great Cubley, Hulland Ward, Long Eaton, Melbourne, Mickleover, Peartree, Sandiacre and Shardlow.

Speaking on Twitter, Sky's help team initially told Burton Mail's sister paper the Derby Telegraph last night: "The cable has actually been cut by a third party contractor working on behalf of someone else, we are waiting for them getting back to us with more information. At this stage I do not have a time for when it will be fixed."

However just before 9pm the help team tweeted that the damage was caused by an "underground fire".

Sky's help team tweeted just after 9pm to say that engineers would not be able to access the site "at least until the early hours of the morning" due to "health and safety issues" caused by the fire.
