Stephen Warnock is under no illusions as to how tough the Brewers' second season in the Championship will be, describing English football's second tier as "one of the toughest leagues in the world".

Warnock joined Albion earlier this week on a one-year deal after his release from Wigan Athletic - who were relegated from the Championship back to League One at the first time of asking.

And the ex-Derby County full-back, who has been around the block with the likes of Premier League trio Liverpool, Aston Villa and Blackburn Rovers, is under no illusions as to how difficult next term will be.

"I think it's very difficult, with the teams that have come down from the Premier League and the teams that have come up from the other division," he said.

"You look at it and you've got to understand that this is one of the toughest leagues in the world now."

Burton Albion's players were back in pre-season training yesterday, and all but two of the squad trained with the first-team up at St George's Park.

Jackson Irvine and new club-record signing Liam Boyce are the only current absentees, with both being given extra time off ahead of their returns after being on international duty following the end of the 2016/17 campaign.

Academy midfielder Tom Hammerton also took part alongside the first-team.

The first day of pre-season on Thursday was largely fitness based and involved speed tests, agility tests and the yo-yo test, which sees players running back and forth in a set space - with a 10-second interval in between until they are unable to continue.

And club captain John Mousinho was pleased to be back with the squad and taking the early steps ahead of another unrelenting campaign.

"It's great to be back," he told the club's website.

"It's good coming back and seeing all the lads and some new faces, just to dust the cobwebs off, get the boots on and get back out there."

Brewers defender Ryan Delaney helped his loan side Cork City to a 2-0 win over Levadia Tallin in the first-round of the Europa League qualifers on Thursday night.

Delaney started and played the full 90 minutes as the League of Ireland table-toppers cruised to a first-leg away win in Estonia.

Next week's return leg at Cork's home of Turners Cross will give City the chance to advance through to the next stage of qualifying.

Cork still have to negotiate the second and third qualifying rounds before the play-off round, which then opens the door to the Europa League proper.

And finally - after Chris O'Grady was snapped up by Chesterfield earlier this week - we looked at where Albion's loanees from last season have ended up this summer above.
