Burton Albion have named defender Shaun Barker as their new club captain following John Mousinho's departure from the club.

Albion stalwart Mousinho left the Brewers on Thursday night, completing a deadline day switch to Oxford United.

That move ended the former Stevenage man's three-year stay at the Pirelli Stadium, during which time the Brewers embarked on their unforgettable rise from League Two to the Championship.

But now Barker, with more than 200 Championship appearances under his belt, takes over the role as club captain - with fellow defenders Stephen Warnock and Jake Buxton both having worn the armband so far this term on the field.

Albion manager Nigel Clough stressed, however, that Barker's role is likely to be limited to that of an off-field capacity, with the 34-year-old not expected to see much game-time this term.

The former Rotherham United man was signed by the Brewers hours before last season's 1-0 win over Derby County, coming on as a 90th-minute substitute in that game to complete his remarkable return to senior football, four-and-a-half years after a potentially career-ending injury sustained for the Rams - the side he was captaining at the time.

Barker went on to make a further four appearances off the bench last term, with the Brewers losing only one of those - a 3-1 defeat to Norwich City.

"Shaun won't be starting too many games so he will have the club captain role and we will see about the captain on the pitch in the next few days," Clough said at Wednesday's press conference ahead of the Leeds United game this weekend.

"Shaun is an influential figure in the dressing room and he’s perfect for that role."
