Nigel Clough says Burton Albion are still making enquiries about a new goalkeeper ahead of the 2017/18 season.

Clough has made a 'keeper one of his primary transfer targets this summer following the departure of Jon McLaughlin - Albion's first-choice stopper for the past three seasons - at the end of his contract last month.

Stephen Bywater and Harry Campbell are currently the Brewers' two senior goalkeeping options.

Only Bywater has a first-team appearance to his name at the Pirelli Stadium, and he played an important role between the sticks late on last term in helping Albion avoid the drop.

He has missed the Brewers' first two pre-season friendlies so far this summer for personal reasons, according to Clough - with Campbell impressing in both and keeping a couple of clean sheets.

Academy 'keeper Callum Hawkins came off the bench against Kidsgrove, with Sam Hornby having left to join Port Vale earlier in the summer.

It means work is ongoing in Burton's search for another goalkeeper as Clough looks to bolster his squad in time for the visit of Cardiff City on August 5.

"We are still making enquiries about goalkeepers," he said.

"We've got a couple on the go at the moment, we've been knocked back with a couple."

And the Brewers' transfer search is continuing further upfield as well, according to the Albion boss.

"We are after another midfielder, another defender and then we'll see what happens with Matty Fryatt," he added.

Clough also confirmed that the deals they are currently looking at constitutes a mix of permanent and loan signings.

Matty Fryatt in pre-season action for Burton Albion

Ex-Nottingham Forest and Leicester City striker Fryatt has played 45 minutes in each of Albion's two pre-season friendlies so far against Kidsgrove Athletic and Mickleover Sports.

He showed some good awareness in both matches to find space in the box for a shot. Had it not been for some good goalkeeping on Friday against Sports, he might have had a couple of goals to his name.

Andy Garner previously said Burton had been impressed by the experienced forward's showings in training, and could be in line for a possible deal at the Pirelli if pre-season goes well.
