Former Burton Albion goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin could be set to join Scottish Premiership side Hearts.

The 29-year-old - a stalwart of the Brewers team that earned back-to-back promotions from League Two to the Championship before he starred in the second-tier last term - was released by Albion in May.

Having turned down two contract offers in the summer of 2016, according to Clough , McLaughlin went on to make 45 appearances in 2016/17 before sustaining a season-ending injury against Birmingham City in April.

After leaving Burton, the ex-Bradford City man had a trial with Hull City last month.

But having not been offered a deal with the Brewers' Championship rivals, he is now spending time with Hearts.

He joined last Thursday for a week-long trial - and the Scottish club are set to decide this week whether to offer him a contract.

"Jon's done fine so far," interim coach Jon Daly told the Edinburgh Evening News.

"He was in for a couple of days last week, but it was difficult to see him because we were doing a lot of match preparation for Saturday's game at Ibrox.

"It was hard for me to get a close look at him because he was working with Paul Gallacher, the goalkeeping coach, and our other keepers.

"I'll have a chat with Paul over the next few days and see how he thinks Jon has done because he's the goalkeeping expert.

"The plan was to have him in again and get a closer look at him, and then we see where we go from there."
