Former Burton Albion manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is reportedly in the frame for the vacant managerial post at Northampton Town, according to HITC Sport.

Another ex-Brewer in Shrewsbury Town boss Paul Hurst, who made 17 appearances at the Pirelli Stadium under current Albion boss Nigel Clough back in 2008, is also in the running for the Sixfields job.

Hasselbaink has been out of work since being sacked by Queens Park Rangers last November, having left the Brewers for Loftus Road in December 2015.

The former Chelsea and Leeds United man will forever be remembered at the Pirelli Stadium for guiding the Brewers out of League Two before guiding Albion to the top of the League One table upon his departure.

Northampton are the first club to have sacked a manager this season, with Justin Edinburgh departing Town after seeing his side lose all four of their opening league games to extend their winless run from last season to 12 games.

Because Hasselbaink currently out of a job, he is understood by HTC to be the favourite for the job as his appointment would not require Northampton to pay out any compensation, unlike Hurst's.

The former Atletico Madrid striker is reportedly keen to get back into management, and has since been spotted at the Pirelli - watching the Brewers' 2-1 win over Birmingham City earlier this month.

Since departing from QPR, Hasselbaink has appeared on Sky Sports News and as part of the satellite broadcaster's coverage of the EFL.
