Burton Albion fell to a third Championship defeat from as many games last night as recently-relegated Middlesbrough ran out 2-0 winners at the Riverside.

Britt Assombalonga - who scored twice for Nottingham Forest against the Brewers back in August 2016 - claimed both goals with a couple of classy finishes.

Albion, meanwhile, ended a second consecutive game down to 10 men, with Hope Akpan shown a straight red card for a foul on Boro substitute Lewis Baker.

Burton Albion manager Nigel Clough consoles his players after defeat at Middlesbrough

Nigel Clough's certainly had their moments, matching their high-class hosts for long spells and looking likely to find an equaliser in the early stages of the second half.

That led Clough to say he was 'delighted' with the efforts of his players - but it was ultimately to no avail.
