Jamie Allen admits he was a little surprised to be thrown straight into action for Burton Albion last weekend.

But the Brewers' third deadline-day signing wants to make sure Nigel Clough keeps having reason to show faith in him on the pitch as the season goes on - beginning with tomorrow's home clash with Fulham.

Having signed for Albion just before 11pm on August 31, 22-year-old Allen was given his debut at the first opportunity on Saturday, as he partnered Matty Lund and Kyle McFadzean in central midfield at Leeds United.

That was a tough afternoon for every Burton player in a 5-0 defeat, but Allen showed flashes of promise, before turning in a composed display in Tuesday's 0-0 draw at Norwich City, this time with Luke Murphy and Lucas Akins alongside him.

Lund, Matt Palmer and Hope Akpan were all out injured for that game, showing the options Clough will have at his disposal when his entire midfield unit is fit.

And Allen says his focus is now on proving to his new manager that he is capable of thriving on stepping into the Championship for the first time.

"It was a bit (of a surprise) on Saturday," he said after helping Albion earn their first away point of the season in midweek.

"I didn't really think I'd be in there straightaway.

"But I hope the manager has the trust in me to play games, so I just need to keep proving him right that I am capable of playing in this league.

"Lundy was out on Tuesday, and a few others as well.

"I hope, when I do play, I can fill those gaps in and do my best on the pitch."

Allen will certainly be in contention for a starting spot as Burton return to the Pirelli Stadium to take on Fulham this weekend.

And with the Brewers having got their points tally ticking over once again, the former Rochdale man believes it is a good time to be heading back to home soil.

"I think it is a good game for us to be back at home," he added.

"It'll be my home debut if I play.

"I am looking forward to it, and if we take the performance that we did against Norwich, we've got every chance of winning it."
