Burton Albion are into the business end of their pre-season preparations as they take on League One's Shrewsbury Town at New Meadow this afternoon.

The Brewers have only two friendlies left ahead of their Championship curtain-raiser next Saturday, with today's test followed up by Tuesday night's visit to the Pirelli Stadium of Leicester City.

We are expecting a full-strength side today, with Nigel Clough suggesting in midweek that this would be the final full run our for his side before the Cardiff City game.

Joe Sbarra goes on a run against West Bromwich Albion

Albion will be hoping to notch their first win of pre-season against the Shrews against League opposition, having so far come unstuck against AFC Wimbledon and West Bromwich Albion, suffering 3-0 and 1-0 losses respectively.

Burton Albion 0 - 1 West Bromwich Albion - the verdict: Brewers hold their own against classy Baggies

There were certainly plenty for Burton fans to be encouraged by following Tuesday night's loss against West Brom, with the Brewers matching their Premier League opponents before fading at the last.

They followed that up with a 9-0 win at Arnold Town on Thursday night, with a team mixing a combination of first-team and academy players strolling to victory against the East Midlands Counties side.

The Brewers have almost certainly lost one striker for next weekend - but it’s not two...

Here's the official word on Liam Boyce's injury

Nigel Clough issued us with an injury update straight after the final whistle...

Joshua Murray's verdict from a grim day at New Meadow

Boyce’s injury and Sordell’s red card overshadowed what as actually a good workout for Nigel Clough’s men.

Hope Akpan's optimistic about Boyce' injury

On the pitch it looked bad - but he’s walking on it and putting weight on it

Nigel Clough on Liam Boyce's injury

We won’t know anything on Monday until after his scan. There’s no point in speculating until we know anything on Monday

We'll also get the lowdown on Liam Boyce's injury

We’ll bring it to you as soon as we have it.

Stay tuned for Joshua Murray's verdict

We’ll bring you our take on events, in which a bizarre first-half is sure to be examined in great detail.

Full-time from New Meadow

It’s finished 1-0 to Shrewsbury - courtesy of Shaun Whalley’s late penalty.

But that isn’t, or wasn’t, the story.

Marvin Sordell’s sending off, and Liam Boyce’s stretchering off, were the real talking points of this supposed pre-season friendly.

88: Inches wide!

Jon Nolan shoots from inside the box, but it trickles just wide of Bywater’s right-hand post...

86: Such a shame for Buxton

He’d been defensively solid all-game, but he couldn’t stop the onrushing Whalley, and one twist and turn proved too many...

85: GOAL! 1-0 Shrewsbury

Whalley dispatches it with aplomb.

Right down the middle. Bywater dives to his right, but has no chance.

85: PENALTY

Buxton gives a penalty away after fouling Whalley...

83: Brewers have gone 4-4-1

With Naylor the lone striker.

Didn’t think I’d ever say that.

81: Salop fans want a penalty

They thought Buxton was holding back Lenell John-Lewis - but they won’t get it and Burton clear their lines from the resulting corner.

80: Shaun Whaley was nearly in there for Shrews

Weaving his way through the Brewers box, it required Buxton to be alert and put a foot in.

He’s had a good game.

79: Akins didn't look happy when he came off

Presumably about the lack of friendliness in this pre-season friendly.

79: Shrews making another sub

Nolan is replaced by Ebou Adams.

McCrory will join Naylor

Akins and Dyer coming off.

76: Naylor ready to come on

Does he get a look in at wing-back if Akins is forced to play up-front next week?

75: Sbarra works a shooting opportunity, but his effort is a tame one

And it’s easily saved by Henderson.

74: Sbarra earns the Brewers a throw up-field

Using his pace to good effect, there - forcing the ‘keeper to clear his lines.

72: Shrews come again

Jon Nolan’s lofted ball can’t quite find Dodds, who looked impeded by McFadzean...

70: POST!

Louis Dodds smashes the post from close-range after the ball fell to him from a Shrews corner.

Best chance of the game so far.

68: Nicely done by Salop 'keeper Henderson

Dyer must have thought he would make it to the byline to keep Buxton’s long ball in, but Henderson fakes his kick and watches it out.

67: And it is Murphy who makes way

Some fresh blood in midfield might help Albion get on the ball a little more...

65: Matty Plalmer ready to come on

Probably in place of Murphy, I reckon.

62: Welcome to this game, Mousinho

He’s clattered into by a Shrews man, and gets up and voices his thoughts on the matter.

Which weren’t PG-rated, to say the least.

61: Nice little interplay

Mousinho and Sbarra play a nice little give-and-go, but there’s too much on it...

60: Shrews bringing on 5 players

Let’s see how this goes down...
