Luke Varney believes Burton Albion's strength in depth can shine through at Queens Park Rangers tomorrow and moving forward for the rest of the season.

Varney wore the captain's armband in midweek as the Brewers' Carabao Cup journey came to an end at Manchester United in a 4-1 defeat.

Nigel Clough made nine changes for that game from the side that beat Fulham in the Championship four days previously - and it is likely switches will be made again as they look to replicate the success of their previous trip to Loftus Road back in January.

That game ended in a 2-1 win for Albion, with four of Burton's January signings featuring.

It has been the Brewers' summer business which has truly helped boost the options at Clough's disposal for the 2017/18 campaign.

And with competition across the park, Varney feels his side are capable of pushing up the table.

"We'll have a lot of fresh legs (at QPR) - obviously we should show that we've got a lot stronger squad this year," said Varney, who missed the last meeting with the Rs with a punctured lung and broken rib.

"We really feel happy with what we've got and that we can mount a bit of a push up the league now.

"So we're looking forward to lads coming back in, and it'll be a real tough game.

"Obviously we know that, but we're confident about going there. We got a good result there last year.

"We feel that we have a squad now and can mount a bit of pressure and push up that league.

"We don't want to be there or thereabouts every year.

"We feel like we have a lot more strength in depth now, and you could see at Old Trafford, we put a decent squad out - and we'll have a lot more fresh legs out there come Saturday."

Albion's league form has taken a real upturn since they suffered defeat in each of their first three outings this season.

Eight points from a possible 15 available to them since the 2-0 loss at Middlesbrough sees them with some genuine momentum heading to Loftus Road.

"It's a massive game, and we've already said, 'roll on Saturday'," added Varney.

"We're off the back of two decent results, confidence is definitely high for us.

"It was a fantastic win for us against Fulham. The camp has been good, and I think you could see at United that there was a of confidence about us.

"We felt good on the pitch. The score might not have shown that, but we feel good about going into the weekend."
