Nigel Clough believes Sean Scannell's desire to drop down from the Premier League to join Burton Albion bodes well for the impact he can make at the club.

The 26-year-old Huddersfield Town winger signed a season-long loan deal with the Brewers on Friday and then sat in the stands to watch his new side secure their first victory of the season with a 2-1 triumph over Birmingham City.

Burton had been bottom of the Championship table and without a point to their name - after only three games, of course - when Scannell joined.

Goals from Marvin Sordell and Lloyd Dyer against the Blues ensured that was no longer the case by Saturday morning, with Clough hopeful that Scannell's added quality can play a part in helping Albion maintain their momentum.

And given the former Crystal Palace man could have attempted to break into the Terriers side during their first ever Premier League campaign, Clough is encouraged by the winger's decision to aid the Brewers' second-tier cause.

"We are thrilled with him", said the Burton boss on his side's eighth signing of the summer.

"He's somebody we've admired over quite a few years, being in the Championship and playing against him and watching him play.

"We were surprised he's only 26, because he's one of these players who seems to have been around for quite some time.

"It's great when he sees a team bottom of the Championship after three games and says, 'I'll come on loan for the season for you from a Premier League club'.

"That's a brilliant sign for us that he wants to come and play for us."

Scannell is set for his Brewers debut in midweek when they make the trip to Cardiff City in the second round of the Carabao Cup, with the Huddersfield winger yet to feature competitively so far this term.

And Clough is hopeful of having another new face in his squad by the time things are underway at the Cardiff City Stadium.

"Sean Scannell will certainly get on the pitch (at Cardiff), we hope to have another loan in before then as well if we can.

"And you'll see the likes of Joe Sbarra and Ben Fox out there as well, so it's another good opportunity for them."
