Burton Albion defender Jake Buxton would be open to a move to Notts County at some point in his career, according to County's chairman Alan Hardy.

Hardy revealed that Buxton told him he would "love" to come to Meadow Lane in a recent meeting between the pair.

Notts boss Kevin Nolan also spoke to Buxton about coming onboard, before the experienced centre-back elected to sign a one-year deal with the Brewers ahead of the 2017/18 campaign.

Buxton began his career with Mansfield Town and spent six years with the club before moving to Burton.

He then helped the side to the Football League by winning the Conference title in 2009, before following then-Albion manager Nigel Clough to Derby.

He left the Rams after seven years and joined Wigan last summer, making 42 appearances in 2016/17 as the Latics were relegated back to the third tier.

Buxton - who mutually terminated his contract with the Latics to move closer to his family in Nottinghamshire - has since swapped Wigan for Burton alongside former Stephen Warnock.

Upon Buxton's release from his contract with Wigan last month, Hardy took to social media to announce that he would be meeting with the 32-year-old about a potential move to County.

That never materialised, but Hardy has since revealed what was said in the discussion between the pair and suggests a future move for the ex-Ram is not out of the question.

"Jake said he would love to come here at some point and who knows what could happen," he told the Nottingham Post.

"If it doesn't work out at Burton and in January he's available then that's something we could look at.

"Jake has certainly not closed the door on coming to Notts at some point in his career and this time next year his circumstances might have changed."
