It wasn't easy, but Burton Albion booked their spot in tonight's Carabao Cup second-round draw with a thrilling 3-2 win over Oldham Athletic last night.

A game that remained goalless up to the break burst into life in the second half, with Luke Varney converting into an open net after intercepting a sloppy backpass and round Latics keeper Ben Wilson.

The hosts hit back through Paul Green's free-kick and a Craig Davies' penalty, before Matty Lund finished a fine Joe Sbarra run to level things up again.

And the final say was left to Lucas Akins , who slotted home from the spot after Damien McCrory was felled in the 86th minute, ensuring Nigel Clough's side avoided extra-time and register a first competitive win of 2017/18 ahead of Saturday's trip to Hull City.
