Sunderland have confirmed the appointment of Simon Grayson as manager, filling the vacancy left by ex-Manchester United boss David Moyes.

The three-year deal sees Grayson depart fellow Championship club Preston North End, whom he led to an 11th-placed finish in the second tier last term.

"I am delighted to come to Sunderland, a club with such wonderful history and tradition, and I’m excited by the opportunity to manage this club and I want to bring the good times back," Grayson told the Black Cats' website.

Burton Albion manager Nigel Clough had been the bookmakers' favourite for the role with the Stadium of Light club for a short while last month, but no approach was made to the club.

Elsewhere, striker Idriss Saadi will be appearing in Cardiff City’s pre-season campaign after a season away on loan at Belgian side KV Kortrijk last term.

The Algerian, signed from French second-tier side Clermont two years ago, struggled to make an impression with the Bluebirds as a result of fitness problems.

Cardiff travel to the Pirelli Stadium for their opening game of the 2017/18 season on August 5.

Nottingham Forest manager Mark Warburton expects interest in striker Britt Assombalonga this summer - but he has no intention to sell despite rumours of a possible move to the Premier League.

Top-flight sides Burnley and Huddersfield Town, and fellow Championship club Middlesbrough, have all been linked with the Forest forward.

Assombalonga scored 14 in a Forest side that struggled last term, despite a lengthy knee injury.

Reported Leeds United target Filip Helander has claimed he does not know of any approach made by the Yorkshire club, despite claims that a bid had been tabled.

The 24-year-old, who plays for Serie A side Bologna, has remained coy on his future.

"I do not know, I do not know anything, I'm not too familiar with [the speculation], I've just been on vacation recently," he told Fotboll Skanalen.

Continuing on a Leeds theme, German goalkeeper Felix Wiedewald is set to complete a move to Elland Road from Bundesliga side SV Werder Bremen in a deal worth £500,000, according to the Yorkshire Post.

The 27-year-old would be Thomas Christiansen’s third import of the summer.

Barnsley defender Marc Roberts looks set to exit Oakwell, with Birmingham City and Hull City reportedly interested in the centre-back.

Tykes CEO Gauthier Ganaye says he believes Roberts could be gone by the weekend and that the club's valuation for the player has nearly been met.
