Dozens of Moira residents got the chance to celebrate the village's history and heritage along with sampling some more modern treats at this year's Moira Community Day.

Visitors headed to Moira Village Hall on Saturday, September 16, to meet with other groups in their communities.

Stall holders with a story to tell lined the hall, ready to tell eager visitors about what they do and to share their own part in the village's history.

Iain M Hambling, historian and archivist at TG Green's Pottery, was on hand to show off his collection of the iconic white and blue cornishware. Mr Hambling has been collecting the iconic pottery since 1991, and now holds an archive of products after the closure of the Church Gresley factory in 2007.

Local resident David McDowell also had a stall to inform people about his beekeeping business.

Mr McDowell, also known as The Bee Farmer, was on hand to teach interested locals about the different aspects associated with beekeeping as well as showing off his products ranging from honey to wax and polish.

He said: "It was excellent. It live in the village as well, so a lot of people who came have seen me in my truck driving around. It was nice to be able to meet them and explain what it is I do.

"Some of the people I spoke to are also interested in coming down and having a look at what it takes to be a beekeeper and are looking into one of the beekeeping experience days I offer."

Members of Blackfordby Scouts were also on hand with a specially baked cake worthy of the Bake Off tent, as well is informing visitors about the interesting activities they have been up to.

North West Leicestershire MP Andrew Bridgen made an appearance along with the chairman of North West Leicestershire District Council Virge Richichi and the chairman of Ashby Woulds Town Council Sue McKendrick.

Visitors had fun learning about the mining village's history from members of the Heart of the Forest Heritage Group, who displayed a large photographic display of the old mines and potteries in the area.

The South Derbyshire and Ashby Woulds Amateur Radio Group, Moira Potters, Ashby Canal Society, Ashby Woulds Town Council and local churches were also on hand on the day to talk to locals.
