A popular fish and chip shop in Swadlincote is frying high after being recognised with the National Federation of Fish Friers Fish and Chip Quality Award.

Andy’s Fish Bar in Church Gresley is owned by husband and wife Chris and Elena Constantinou, who are both third generation chip shop owners.

The award shows consumers that they are getting their fish suppers from a high quality outlet, that surpasses standard quality checks.

Chris said: “We are delighted to achieve this prestigious award. To be recognised as one of the top fish and chip shops by the federation is indeed an honour and a credit to our hardworking staff who I would like to offer my sincere thanks for their continued hard work and efforts to maintain our excellent reputation.

“The award doesn’t just represent the fish and chips we produce, but also the hard work and high quality produce our local suppliers provide us to work with.”

The fish bar has recently been refurbished, allowing up to 25 customers to sit down to enjoy their meals. Gluten-free fish and chips are served from 4.30pm to 8pm Monday to Saturday, and the shop even holds a Breastfeeding Welcome Here award.

Currently, only 225 fish and chip outlets across the country have been recognised with the quality award. Andy's is one of just two restaurants in Derbyshire to be recognised; the other being Seafish Restaurant in Ripley.

President of the federation, Gregg Howard explained: “The National Federation of Fish Friers Fish and Chip Quality Award assessment is extremely comprehensive. Food safety is a key area that we examine together with other key aspects of the business including the preparation and cooking equipment, to the management of paperwork and the traceability of fish.

Andy’s Fish Bar clearly takes pride in where it sources its fish and potatoes from.

“Achieving the Fish and Chip Quality Award provides reassurance to customers that they are being served cooked food using high-quality ingredients.”
