Everybody knows that Fridays are always the longest days at work. Knowing you're so close to the weekend can make the hours drag, when all you want to do is head to the pub and celebrate the weekend in style.

But fear not because tomorrow, Friday, September 15, is National 4pm Finish Day.

Energy drink Red Bull is behind the scheme which aims to promote productivity and working smart, rather than long, unproductive hours.

Sweden has toyed with this idea recently and introduced a six-hour work day instead of the traditional eight-hour day, although it was scrapped earlier this year.

What will you do with your extra hour?

However, some people still believe it is the way forward. On making National 4pm Finish Day possible, a Red Bull spokesman said it "isn't about slacking off, it's about being more productive".

"That's why we've surveyed a range of experts – including a scientist, an ex-sports star and a range of successful entrepreneurs – for their tips on clearing your in-tray,” they added.

Last year plenty of employers were on board and hopefully it’s the same for you again this week.

You can sign up for National 4pm Finish Day on the Red Bull website.

What to do with your extra hour

For some reason, finishing and four instead of five feels like you have the entire day left to enjoy.

We've come up with some ideas of how you can spend your extra hour

  • Head down to one of Burton's pubs for a quick pint before home time (only if you're not driving though)
  • Nip into Primark to see if you can get your hands on a bargain
  • Get the orders in for your chippy tea. Check out the best fish and chip shops around Burton and South Derbyshire according to you
  • Get fit and go for a swim at the Meadowside Leisure Centre
  • Or maybe the most sensible idea, head home quickly and avoid the traffic on Burton Bridge before it gets too bad at 5pm.
