Ten vehicles, including a van, are believed to have been involved in an accident on the A50 causing delays for drivers.

The eastbound side of the A50 at junction 1, in Derbyshire is closed with debris on the road and recovery work taking place.

The accident happened near the B6540 turning for Tamworth Road, Rycroft Road and London Road for Long Eaton and there is congestion back to junction 3 Swarkestone Road, the turning for Swadlincote and Melbourne.

The accident which happened underneath a bridge, is causing delays and queueing of four miles and is affecting traffic towards the M1.

A spokesman for East Midlands Ambulance Service: "We received a call at 7.34am this morning, on September 7, to a 10-vehicle collision on the A50 near Shardlow.

"The caller reported that the collision involved nine cars and a van. We sent two paramedics in ambulance cars, a crewed ambulance and an air ambulance.

"Eight people were treated by ambulance crews at the scene and one patient with minor injuries was taken to Royal Derby Hospital by land ambulance."

  • Traffic is now reported by crowd-sourced driving app Waze to be jammed for 4.5 miles from A50 junction one at Shardlow almost back to the A50 junction with the A514 at Chellaston.
  • Traffic company Inrix says up to ten vehicles including two lorries could be involved in the crash.
  • The location of the crash is under the A50 bridge, known as the Sawley Junction.
  • Leicestershire Police have said they believe no one has been seriously injured in the incident.
  • A stretch of the A50 underneath the bridge is currently closed eastbound and drivers need to divert by coming off the carriageway, onto the roundabout, and back onto the A50 towards the M1.
