Burton pub hunting for world's worst quiz team

Historic former school house in Yoxall could be bulldozed to make way for parking, new plans reveal

A 200-year-old former school house which is at risk of collapse could be bulldozed to make way for disabled parking bays for a nearby church’s less able parishioners, new plans have revealed.

If permission is given the Old School House will be demolished to create two disabled bays to serve the nearby St Francis of Sales Roman Catholic Church, in Wood Lane, Yoxall. It is under the parish of Barton under Needwood.

Car fire on the the A50 eastbound

There is a car fire on the A50 eastbound this Wednesday afternoon.

The incident is happening between the A522 for Uttoxeter and Upper Teane, and the A518 Derby Road, at the racecourse roundabout.

One lane has been closed, as confirmed by traffic monitoring website Inrix and there is heavy traffic on the road because of this.

The fire is reported as being close to JCB along that stretch of road.

Burton suffering an 'epidemic' of paedophiles, as vigilante group holds fund-raiser

Burton is suffering with an ‘epidemic’ of paedophiles roaming free, a vigilante group has claimed as it has chosen the town to launch a charity day.

However, Staffordshire Police say Burton is just like any other town in Staffordshire, and is not an exception to the rule, with no more of a problem than anywhere else.

Keeping Kids Safe, a vigilante group which catches and films paedophile groomers, is hoping to raise £2,000 for a child abuse charity through a fund-raising day and sponsored leg wax in Burton, even though the group hails from Mansfield.

Delays on Ashby Road this evening

There is some heavy traffic on the Ashby Road as people head home from work on this Wednesday evening.

Congestion caused by the closure of St Peter’s Bridge, in Burton is causing drivers to take an alternative route.

The queuing traffic is on St Peter’s Street right to the bridge and Main Street.

Investigations continue into the death of Stretton man Francis Lovelock

Police are continuing their investigations after a man with a head injury was found dead at his home in Stretton.

Francis Lovelock, who was known as Frank, was found dead by officers from Staffordshire Police when they were called at 8.15pm on Saturday, July 29.

The 64-year-old was found at a house in Main Street and a post-mortem examination revealed the cause of his death as a head injury from a blunt object.

Bat put down by RSPCA after being found at golf club with fishing hook impaled through its face

A wild bat has been put to sleep by the RSPCA after being found with a fishing hook impaled through its face at Branston Golf and Country Club.

The animal was been identified as a daubentons bat and was found at the club, in Burton Road, Branston on Wednesday, August 23.

A member of the public contacted the RSPCA after finding the animal dangling on a fishing line from a tree.

'Lucky' driver pulled from dramatic smash in Overseal

Horrifying images have been revealed showing a car which had smashed into a lamppost in a South Derbyshire village.

Derby Roads Police Twitter page revealed the images following the crash which happened in Acresford Road, Overseal, in the early hours of the morning on September 3.

The driver, in his 40s, was later taken to Burton’s Queen’s Hospital, incredibly, with non-life threatening injuries.

Burton councillor celebrates as famous 'man-shaped' pothole is finally filled in

One of Burton’s most famous potholes has finally been filled in as part of the £5 million scheme to repair 13,000 potholes across the county.

Back in June, Councillor Syed Hussain, who is responsible for the Anglesey ward at East Staffordshire Borough Council showed the incredible size of the pothole in Walker Street, Burton, by lying down in it.

The father of three made improving the road one of his top promises during his local election campaign in May, 2017.

Fine of £120 for South Derbyshire parents whose children are regularly late for school

South Derbyshire parents are being warned they face a fine of up to £120 for each child if they are regularly late to school.

Derbyshire County Council said that parents and carers face receiving a penalty notice if a pupil is “persistently late without an acceptable reason” as schools get tough on lateness.

Councillor Alex Dale, the council’s cabinet member for young people, said: “Derbyshire County Council is clear that it is the responsibility of parents and carers to ensure their children attend school regularly and on time, in accordance with school rules.

Overturned lorry closes lane on M1

Traffic is queuing on the M1 southbound in Leicestershire due to an overturned lorry. The incident, which happened at J24 A6/A50/A453 for Kegworth and East Midlands Airport has resulted in the closure of one lane on the entry slip road from the A453 above the motorway onto the southbound M1.

Stapenhill woman Muriel Smith talks parrots, helicopter rides and seeing the pope as she turns 100

A Burton preacher’s wife has praised the Lord for her wonderful life and fantastic memories as she celebrates her 100th birthday.

Muriel Smith, of Stapenhill, was born in Stoke-on-Trent on September 6, 1917. The oldest of four, Muriel dreamed of raising her own family and using her time to help others so, after leaving school, she spent her days working at Denstone College and going to church.

Buses running up to an hour late in heavy traffic

Midland Classic buses are running late into Burton after being caught up in traffic.

The bus company has put on its Facebook page that several buses are stuck in traffic, including services two, three, eight, nine, 19 and 21. Some of these buses are reported to be up to an hour late.

Three vehicle accident blocks lane on A38

An accident involving three vehicles is causing delays on the A38 Northbound at A513 Alrewas / Tamworth turn off. One lane is blocked resulting in very slow traffic.This happened around the same area as an earlier unconfirmed breakdown.

Paedophile Michael Williams, of Midway, jailed after encouraging children to perform sex acts on internet

A 52-year-old paedophile from Midway encouraged children to perform sexual acts over the internet and was caught with more than 900 indecent images and movies of children on his computer.

Michael Williams, of Midway Road, has now been jailed for six years after appearing at Derby Crown Court to admit possession of a total of 595 movies and 415 indecent images of children in Swadlincote made over a six-year period.

Slow traffic in Woodville

There is slow traffic in Woodville at the A511 Burton Road in both directions which is affecting the A514 for Hartshorne Road and the B5004 Moira Road at the New Inn Roundabout.

Broken down vehicle causing problems on A38

A broken down vehicle is causing traffic problems in Barton at the A38 northbound. The incident has left a lane partially blocked and is holding up drivers around Mill Lane.

Slow traffic on A50 due to roadworks

There is slow traffic on the A50 Eastbound this morning around the A522 for Uttoxeter and Upper Tean with drivers backed up in the roadworks area.

Traffic already building in Burton on St Peter's Bridge diversion routes

Drivers are being warned of long delays this morning as motorists across Burton and South Derbyshire seek alternative routes to get to school and work.

The closure of St Peters Bridge is causing drivers to find an alternative route and is causing delays and tailback on the A444 St Peter’s Street Northbound between the A5189 for St Peter’s Bridge, Main Street and the A511 Ashby Road. It is also affecting the A511 Ashby Road both ways at A444 Stapenhill Road.

Super Shakes in Burton to close its doors blaming lack of shoppers in the town

A popular independent business in Burton is to close next month, blaming a lack of shoppers in the town.

Three young men opened Super Shakes, in Station Street, almost three years ago after dreaming of running their own business selling milkshakes and comic books.

However, due to a lack of custom they have decided to close next month – but will be open for Burton’s statutes fair on October 3 and 4. They have yet to announce the actual closing date.

Today should be bright with sunny spells

Good morning all.

As you round off your Summer holidays and get back into the swings of things you might be happy to find that today’s weather has brightened up from yesterday’s grey and drizzly forecast.

Wednesday is going to be mostly dry with some patchy cloud and sunny spells through the day. It will be rather breezy, with the odd shower possible for some, but most places will be staying dry and temperatures are expected to reach 18C.

Most of the showers will ease off through the evening, leaving most places dry during the early hours, with clear spells and minimum temperatures of 10C.
