Derbyshire police first received a call from a member of the public at 7.15am to say there had been a minor incident.

This was cleared by 8.30am. However, the broken down vehicle caused problems for most of the morning as it blocked a lane on the roundabout, with slow traffic as a result reported until 10.30am before it was removed.

The incident caused issues for buses as well as services were also delayed.

One woman motorist who was stuck in the early morning traffic as she made her way in to work described the scene as "mayhem".

She said: "There was traffic everywhere. I've never seen it so bad.

"Hawkins Lane was gridlocked. People were trying to turn around to find another route. It was just mayhem.

"The traffic was backed up all the way to the A38. When I came off at the A38 sliproad at Clay Mills to Burton the queuing traffic was almost on the A38. It took me an extra 15 minutes to get to work but I was on the other carriageway to where most of the traffic was.

"I found it difficult to park in Hawkin's Lane where I ad heading too as no one would let me through to park my car as it was so bad.

"The traffic on the other carrriageway of the A38 was a lot worse. I dread to think how long they were stuck in the traffic.

"Everyone was looking really frustrated in their cars as well."
