A fuel spillage closed the A50 in both directions this morning (Monday, February 19).

According to traffic information company Inrix, the incident happened on both sides of the road at Leigh Bank, near Checkley, which is north of Uttoxeter.

Staffordshire police told people to avoid the area.

There are 30 minutes of delays on the A50 westbound after the earlier fuel spillage.

Good news for drivers heading to work as the eastbound carriageway has re-opened.

The westbound carriageway remains closed to allow the lane to be cleaned from fuel.

'400 to 500 litres of fuel' spilled on the A50

A spokesperson from Staffordshire police has confirmed that the fuel spillage from a lorry has resulted in 400 to 500 litres of fuel being spilled on the A50.

He said: “The lorry which left Uttoxeter suffered a mechanical fault which has resulted in it emptying its tank. Highways England are currently attending the scene and are working on a diversion.”

The spillage is causing problems for traffic through Uttoxeter and on the A522.
