An accident which happened on the M1 earlier today is causing traffic chaos as the northbound carriageway is gridlocked for a mammoth 12 miles.

The incident took place between Junction 24 for East Midlands Airport and Junction 25 for the A52 and left two of the three lanes shut with the problem being made considerably worse by roadworks in the area.

Traffic information company Inrix said the accident was causing "very slow traffic" and that it "wasn't helped by the already congested road".

Although the collision has been cleared, hefty queues remain and drivers setting out on their commute home have been venting their frustration on social media, calling the situation a "nightmare."

Traffic joining the back of the queue are still being told to expect up to two hours of delays while Highways England has reported that the delays will continue for some time.

It could be some time before traffic is moving normally as the Traffic England website is now saying it could be after 6.30pm before the road is cleared.
