Two protest marches calling for the resignation of sex-text scandal MP Andrew Griffiths are to take place in Burton town centre.

Mr Griffiths resigned from his role as the Minister for Small Business before the Sunday Mirror published a story about his sending explicit text messages to 28-year-old barmaid Imogen Treharne and her friend, who has not been named.

The married father-of-one has apologised but has not resigned as MP for Burton despite calls for him to do so.

The first demonstration is being organised by members of the East Staffordshire Trades Union Council and will take place at noon on Saturday, July 28, outside Burton Town Hall, in King Edward Place.

Secretary of the council William Walker has spoken of his "disgust" at Mr Griffiths' actions.

Mr Walker explained the protest was not simply about Mr Griffiths but was also for rights for women, an end to discrimination and austerity and for a new deal for working people.

A second demonstration will be held in Burton Town Centre on Saturday, August 11, starting at noon.

It is the brainchild of Jessica Eaton, from Burton, who is an international researcher, writer and speaker on the forensic psychology of sexual violence.

The event is being organised through a dedicated Facebook page, which says it is holding the event to demonstrate against the 'appalling behaviour' of Andrew Griffiths.

Mrs Eaton said the group would meet near the town's shovel statue on the corner of High Street and New Street "so we can talk to as many shoppers as possible".

It continued: "Banners, signs and props are welcome. The bigger the better.

"Everyone concerned about Andrew Griffiths is welcome. This protest is not party of politics specific - no matter your political leaning, you are welcome."

Mrs Eaton said she feels the public has been left with no option following the revelations about the MP's 2,000 sleazy text messages.

Earlier this week, she expressed how appalled she was by the MP's messages, many of which alluded to sadistic pleasure in beating and degrading women.

One of the text reads: "Are you going to hold XXX down for me while daddy gives her a beating?"
